Earth Day, celebrated every April 22nd, serves as a global reminder of our responsibility to protect and preserve the environment.

The concerns of key greenhouse gases have once again surged to unprecedented highs in 2023. Given this pressing reality, it’s crucial now more than ever to recognise Earth Day as a powerful call to action for addressing the climate crisis head-on. It’s a time for reflection, action, and commitment to creating a sustainable and harmonious planet for current and future generations.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global initiative dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and action. It’s a global platform for people, communities, and organisations to unite in advocating for our planet’s protection and preservation.

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day falls on April 22nd each year, yet the significance of environmental concerns extends throughout the entirety of April, often referred to as Earth Month. This time is a key moment for bringing attention to and addressing environmental issues worldwide.

Why is Earth Day being celebrated on April 22nd?

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd because it marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. This date was chosen by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, who envisioned a day dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and mobilising public support for environmental protection.

The first Earth Day saw millions of people across the United States coming together to protest against environmental degradation and advocate for a healthier, more sustainable planet. Since then, April 22nd has been recognised globally as a day for environmental activism and action.

Actions to Save Our Planet

Our planet is beautiful, yet it relies on our efforts to flourish. Here are some ways to celebrate Earth Day and save the planet at the same time.

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Practice waste reduction by minimising single-use items, reusing materials when possible, and recycling products such as paper, glass, and plastic.
  2. Conserve Energy: Reduce energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when not in use, using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs, and considering renewable energy sources like solar or wind power.
  3. Plant Trees: Participate in tree planting initiatives to help combat deforestation, enhance air quality, and mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide.
  4. Support Sustainable Practices: Choose eco-friendly products, support local farmers and businesses that prioritise sustainability, and advocate for policies that promote environmental conservation.
  5. Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness about environmental issues by sharing information with friends, family, and on social media platforms. Advocate for policies that address climate change, protect natural habitats, and promote environmental justice.
  6. Clean-up Activities: Organise or participate in community clean-up events to remove litter and pollution from local parks, beaches, rivers, and other natural areas.
  7. Water Conservation: Conserve water by fixing leaks, using water-efficient fixtures, and reducing water waste in daily activities such as bathing, watering plants, and washing dishes.
  8. Engage in Sustainable Transportation: Reduce carbon emissions by walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation whenever possible, and consider transitioning to electric vehicles or alternative fuel vehicles.
  9. Support Environmental Organisations: Donate time, resources, or funds to environmental organisations working to protect and preserve the planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity.
  10. Practice Sustainable Living: Adopt environmentally conscious lifestyle choices such as composting organic waste, choosing sustainable and ethically sourced products, and reducing personal carbon footprints through mindful consumption and behavior changes.

2024 Theme: Planet vs. Plastics

The theme for Earth Day 2024, “Planet vs. Plastics,” tackles one of today’s most urgent environmental challenges: plastic pollution.

Plastics present a major hazard to both human health and the environment. As they break down into microplastics, they release harmful chemicals into our food, water, and air. Advocates are currently demanding for a 60% decrease in plastic usage by 2040 , with the goal of creating a strategy to eliminate plastic pollution.
